The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program gives you an upfront discount of about $272 per kWh (May–December 2026) on an approved home battery — roughly 30% off the installed price. The discount is applied directly on your invoice by an accredited installer, so you never pay the full amount and wait to claim it back.

⚡ Act before 1 January 2027: the rebate drops from ~$272/kWh to ~$228/kWh — about a 16% cut. On a 10kWh battery, installing now versus waiting six months is worth roughly $440 more in discount.
What Changed on 1 May 2026?
The program launched on 1 July 2025 and proved so popular that the government expanded it from $2.3 billion to a $7.2 billion budget over four years — with two important rule changes effective from 1 May 2026:
Change 1: The rebate now steps down every six months
| Installation Period | Approx. Rebate per kWh |
|---|---|
| May – Dec 2026 (now) | $272 |
| Jan – Jun 2027 | $228 |
| Jul – Dec 2027 | $208 |
| 2028 | $164 – $184 |
| 2029 | $124 – $144 |
| 2030 | $84 – $104 |
The discount you receive is locked in by the date your battery is physically installed — not the date you sign.
Change 2: Bigger batteries get a tapered rate
The full per-kWh rate now applies only to the first 14 kWh of usable capacity:
| Capacity Portion | Rebate Level |
|---|---|
| 0 – 14 kWh | 100% of the rate |
| Above 14 – 28 kWh | 60% of the rate |
| Above 28 – 50 kWh | 15% of the rate |
Example — 28kWh system installed in late 2026:
- First 14 kWh: 14 × $272 = $3,808
- Second 14 kWh: 14 × $272 × 60% = $2,285
- Total discount: ≈ $6,090 applied upfront
For most Brisbane families, the sweet spot is still 10–14 kWh — every kWh up to 14 gets the full rate, so a right-sized battery maximises the discount per dollar spent.
Eligibility Checklist: Do You Qualify?
✅ Battery usable capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh (rebate applies to the first 50 kWh)
✅ Battery is on the Clean Energy Council approved list (Sungrow, SolaX and most major brands qualify)
✅ Installed by an installer accredited with Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)
✅ Battery is VPP-capable — joining a VPP is voluntary
✅ Installed at a premises with new or existing rooftop solar
✅ One rebate per electricity meter
✅ Open to homeowners, renters (with landlord consent), small businesses and community facilities
✅ No income test — every eligible household qualifies
How You Actually Claim It (You Do Almost Nothing)
- Get a quote from an accredited installer — the discount appears as a line item on the quote itself
- We assign and create the STCs for your battery on your behalf
- The discount is deducted upfront from your invoice — you pay only the net amount
- Installation and paperwork are completed by the accredited installer; no forms, no waiting for refunds
This is different from a government cheque or tax offset — think of it like the solar STC discount that’s been running for years, just extended to batteries.
Can the Federal Rebate Be Combined With QLD Schemes?
Yes. The federal program is designed to stack with eligible state-based incentives and finance schemes, including:
- Queensland state battery programs — where available and eligible
- Household Energy Upgrades Fund (HEUF) — discounted finance for home energy upgrades
- VPP sign-on payments from electricity retailers — typically $300–$500/year on top
Stacking rules change, so we confirm current combinations for your specific address before installation.
What Does a Battery Cost After the Rebate in Brisbane?
| Battery | Installed (before rebate) | After Federal Rebate |
|---|---|---|
| SolaX 6.5 kWh | $7,000 – $9,000 | $5,200 – $7,200 |
| Sungrow 9.6 kWh | $9,500 – $12,000 | $6,900 – $9,400 |
| 13.5 kWh class | $11,000 – $14,500 | $7,800 – $11,300 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the battery rebate ending?
The program runs to 2030–31, but the per-kWh value roughly halves by 2030. The discount is designed to wind down as battery prices fall — installing earlier captures more of it.
Do I have to join a VPP to get the rebate?
No. The battery must be capable of VPP connection to qualify, but participation is voluntary under the federal scheme. Some retailer VPPs offer optional extra payments if you do join.
I already have solar — can I still claim the battery rebate?
Yes, that’s the most common scenario. The rebate applies to batteries added to existing rooftop solar systems, as long as the battery and installer meet the eligibility checklist above.
Does the rebate apply to small businesses?
Yes — small businesses and community facilities are eligible under the same rules, with one rebate per electricity meter.
